NEET Eligibility Criteria

The eligibility criteria of NEET have been released by the examination authority of NEET i.e. the National Testing Agency (NTA). Candidates seeking admission to Medical, Dental and AYUSH programs are advised to check to eligibility criteria of NEET. The eligibility criteria of NEET will determine the age limit, qualification details, nationality and other necessary requirements that candidates need to fulfill while applying for NEET. Candidates who will not fulfill the NEET 2020 eligibility criteria will not be eligible to appear for the entrance examination. As you all know that NEET is a direct gateway for around 65,000 MBBS seats, so, it is pretty important for candidates to be familiar with the eligibility criteria of NEET 2020. Keep reading further details to know more about the eligibility criteria of NEET 2020. A candidate appearing in NEET must check the eligibility criteria as stipulated in Indian Medical Council Act (1956) and Dentists Act (1948).
Minimum & Maximum Age
  • A student must have completed age of 17 years at the time of admission or will complete the age on or before 31st December of the year of his/her admission to the 1st year MBBS/BDS Course.
  • The upper age limit for NEET is 25 years as on the date of examination with relaxation of 5 years for candidates belonging to OBC/SC/ST/PH category.

The following students are allowed to appear in NEET 2020:
  • Indian Nationals
  • Non Resident Indians (NRIs)
  • Oversees Citizen of India (OCIs)
  • Persons of Indian Origin (PIOs)
  • Foreign Nationals
Quota Seats
85% of the total seats of any college will be reserved for home state students through state counselling. The balance 15% would be open for students from other states which will be filled by all India centralized counselling.

  • Should have completed 10th and 12th grade from the state board
  • Should possess a valid domicile of the state
  • Should possess a residency proof of the state
 15% All India Quota Seats Eligibility
  • Must be an Indian National/NRI/OCI/PIO/Foreign Nationals
  • Must meet the age criteria mentioned above
  • Students from J&K are eligible to appear for exam only after online self-declaration
Academic Qualification
There are 7 eligibility codes in total. A student is required to select any 1 of them. Different codes are for different situations. Before applying for NEET exam, read all 7 codes properly.

Qualifying examination* – Class 12th (Appearing/Result Awaited)
Board – CBSE/ICSE/Other State Boards
Compulsory Subject – Physics, Chemistry, Biology/Biotechnology, English
*Should pass qualifying exam at the time of first round of counselling with the following pass percentage: UR – 50%, PH – 45%, SC/ST/OBC – 40%

Qualifying examination – 10+2 (Passed)
Board – CBSE/ICSE/Other State Boards
Compulsory Subject – Physics, Chemistry, Biology/Biotechnology (including practical tests), English
Open Schools/Private students – NOT ELIGIBLE

Qualifying examination – Pre-degree/Pre-university (Passed)
Compulsory Subject – Physics, Chemistry, Biology/Biotechnology (including practical tests), English
Code: 04
Qualifying examination – Pre-professional/Pre-medical (Passed)
Compulsory Subject – Physics, Chemistry, Biology/Biotechnology, English
Code: 05
Qualifying examination – B.Sc. (1st year)
Compulsory Subject – Physics, Chemistry, Biology/Biotechnology, English

Qualifying examination – B.Sc. (Passed)
Compulsory Subject – Physics, Chemistry, Biology (Botany, Zoology)/Biotechnology
*Also earlier qualifying exam should also have the above compulsory subjects

For NRI/OIC/PIO students
Qualifying examination – Any other exam in scope & standard of 10+2 (Passed)
Compulsory Subject – Physics, Chemistry, Biology/Biotechnology (including practical tests), English
