JEE Main 2020(April): Eligibility Criteria 

National Testing Agency (NTA) along with the authorities of JEE have a prescribed JEE Main Eligibility Criteria. The students must look into it before applying for the JEE Main 2020 (April).

If a candidate is found to violate JEE Main Eligibility Criteria 2020 at any stage of the exam process, right from applying for the exam to verification of documents during the counselling, then they would get their candidature cancelled. 

General JEE Main Eligibility Criteria for 2020 

The Eligibility criteria for the aspirants of JEE Main 2020 (April) is categorised on the following parameters:
  • Year of appearing/ passing the Qualifying examination.
  • Marks obtained in the Qualifying examination.
Particulars Details
Qualifying exam
  • Candidate should have passed class XII or qualifying the exam in 2018 or 2019.
  • Candidate appearing in Class XII or equivalent qualifying exam in 2020 can also apply for JEE Main.
Age Limit
  • There is no age limit. However, they have to pass Class XII or equivalent exam in 2018 or 2019.
  • Candidates appearing for Class XII or equivalent exams in 2020 are also eligible to apply.
Number of attempts
  • JEE Main candidates can participate in the entrance exam for three consecutive years. 
  • The exam will be conducted twice a year, they may appear in both the attempts. 
  • The attempt for an academic year will be considered as One.
Subject/subjects combination for admission into NITs, IIITs and GFTIs
  • For BTech: 
Should have passed the qualifying examination with: Physics, Mathematics and any one of (Chemistry, Biology, Biotechnology, Technical Vocational Subject).
  • For BArch: 
Should have passed the qualifying examination with: Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry
  • For BPlan: 
Should have passed the qualifying examination with: Mathematics

JEE Main 2020 (April) Eligibility Criteria: Age 

There is no upper age limit for appearing in the JEE Main examination. The candidate, however, must have passed Class XII or equivalent examination in 2018 or 2019. Else, they should be appearing in Class XII or equivalent examination in 2020. It is only then will the candidate be allowed to apply for the examination. 

JEE Main 2020 (April) Eligibility Criteria: List of Qualifying Examinations 


  • Class XII or equivalent exam conducted by a recognized Central or State board including ICSE, CBSE and CISCE.
  • Intermediate or Pre-Degree Course exam or Pre-University Course conducted by any of the recognized Board/ University.
  • HSC - Vocational examination
  • The final exam of the two year course of the Joint Services Wing of the National Defence Academy.
  • AICTE or SBTE recognised Diploma of at least three years duration.
  • National Institute of Open Schooling conducted Senior Secondary School Examination with a minimum of five subjects.
  • For admission to IITs, General Certificate Education (GCE) exam (London/ Cambridge/ Sri Lanka) at Advanced level (A).
  • Association of Indian Universities (AIU) recognised School, Board and University examinations in India or in any foreign country recognised as equivalent to Class XII. 

JEE Main 2020 (April) Eligibility Criteria: Year of Passing or Appearing in the Qualifying Exams

Below is the information regarding the year in which a candidate should have passed or appeared in the qualifying examination to be eligible for the JEE Main 2020 (April):
  • The Candidate must have passed the class XII or any other qualifying exam from the list mentioned above in the years 2018 or 2019.
  • The Candidate must be appearing in Class XII or any other equivalent exam in 2020. 
Below is the information regarding the year in which a candidate has passed or appeared in the qualifying examination, which leads to the rejection in his or her candidature in JEE Main 2020:
  • A candidate who has passed the Class XII or equivalent examination in 2017 or before, and those who will appear in 2021 or later will not be eligible to appear in JEE Main 2020.
  • A candidate who has appeared in Class XII in 2017 and has failed in it, but has passed in 2018 also will not be eligible for JEE Main 2020. 

JEE Main 2020 (April) Eligibility Criteria: State Code

State Code is the referral code of the state, from where a candidate has passed his or her Class XII or equivalent examination. It is a vital component which is required to decide the eligibility of a candidate in JEE Main 2020. If the state from which a candidate has passed Class XII or equivalent exam is different from where he or she has given their improvement exam, then the state code of the state from where the candidate had initially passed the qualifying exam will be considered for eligibility. 

JEE Main 2020 (April) Eligibility Criteria: Admission

For Admission into NIT, IIIT & GFTI: Candidate should have scored a minimum of 75 percent marks in Class XII or equivalent exam, or they must be in Top 20 percentile of the Class XII examination. For the SC/ST candidates, a minimum of 65 percent marks should be scored in Class XII or equivalent examination.

For Admission into BArch/BPlanning: Candidates should have scored a minimum of 50 percent marks in Class XII or equivalent exam from a recognized board. 

JEE Main 2020 (April) Eligibility Criteria: Subjects

  • For BTech/BE: The candidate should have passed the qualifying examination with Physics and Mathematics as compulsory subjects along with one of the Chemistry, Biotechnology, Biology and Technical Vocational subjects.
  • For BArch: The candidate should have passed the qualifying examination with Mathematics, Physics & Chemistry as subjects.
  • For BPlanning: The candidate should have passed the qualifying examination with Mathematics as a subject.

Q: What is eligibility for JEE?
A: For admissions in IITs, NITs, IIITs and other CFTIs, the candidate must have scored at least 75 percent marks in Class XII, or be in the top 20 percentile in Class XII exam conducted by the respective board. For SC/ST candidates, the qualifying marks are 65 percent marks.
