JEE Main Eligibility Criteria 2020

National Testing Agency (NTA) has released the eligibility criteria of JEE Main 2020 on September 3, 2019. Students can see the details in their official brochure. Candidates should go through with the JEE Main Eligibility Criteria 2020 in details before they proceed with the application form. Candidates must fulfill the eligibility criteria and qualifications including age, nationality, subjects in class 10+2 or equivalent exam, education and other details to appear in the entrance test. Aspirants who are seeking admission in the undergraduate program of B.E. or Btech must fulfill these criteria. JEE main 2020 exam will be held on January 6 to 11. Candidates can check the result available on the JEE Main official website from January 31. Read this article in detail and carefully before you proceed further. 

JEE Main 2020 Eligibility Criteria

There are 3 basic parameters given below to check the JEE Main 2020 Eligibility Criteria: 
  • Qualifying examination i.e. 10+2 or equivalent
  • Date of birth
  • Marks obtained in the qualifying exam

JEE Main 2020 Eligibility Criteria

Eligibility Particulars Details
Qualifying exam Candidate should have passed class 12 or qualifying exam in 2018 or 2019. Candidate appearing in class 12 or equivalent qualifying exam in 2020 can also apply for JEE Main.
Age Limit There is no age limit. However, the He/She have to pass 10+2 or equivalent exam in 2018 or 2019. Candidates appearing for 10+2 or equivalent exam in 2020 are also eligible to apply.
Number of attempts JEE Main candidates can participate in the entrance exam for 3 consecutive years. The exam will be conducted twice a year, they may appear in both the attempts. The attempt for an academic year will be considered as One.
Subject/subjects combination for admission into NITs, IIITs and GFTIs Should have passed qualifying examination with B.Tech/ B.E Physics Mathematics Any one of (Chemistry, Biology, Biotechnology, Technical Vocational Subject), B.Arch Mathematics Physics Chemistry B.Plan Mathematics

JEE Main Eligibility Criteria - Age Limit

Age is not a bar for appearing in JEE Main examination. Remember candidates must pass 10+2 or equivalent exam in the year 2018, 2019 or appearing year which means 2020. But candidates must pass the appearing 10+2 examination to be eligible for appearing in the test.
JEE Main Eligibility Criteria for Qualifying Exam
  1. The final examination of 10+2 system, conducted by any recognized Central/ State Board, such as Central Board of Secondary Education, New Delhi; Council for the Indian School Certificate Examinations, New Delhi; etc. 
  2. Intermediate or two-year Pre-University examination conducted by a recognized Board/University.
  3.  Final examination of the two-year course of the Joint Services Wing of the National Defense Academy
  4. Senior Secondary School Examination conducted by the National Institute of Open Schooling with a minimum of five subjects.
  5. Any Public School/ Board/ University examination in India or any foreign country recognized as equivalent to the 10+2 system by the Association of Indian Universities (AIU).
  6. Higher Secondary Certificate Vocational Examination. 
  7.  A Diploma recognized by AICTE or a State board of technical education of at least a 3-year duration.  
  8. General Certificate Education (GCE) examination (London/Cambridge/Sri Lanka) at the Advanced (A) level. 
  9. High School Certificate Examination of the Cambridge University or International Baccalaureate Diploma of the International Baccalaureate Office, Geneva.

JEE Main Eligibility Criteria 2020 for Year of appearance in the Qualifying Exam

Candidates who have passed the class 12 or any other equivalent exam in 2018 or 2019 are eligible. Students which are also appearing he 10+2 in the year 2020 are eligible but the condition is that they must pass the qualifying exam. For candidates who have cleared their 10+2 exams in 2017 or before are not eligible for JEE main 2020. But candidates who failed in 2017 but passed in 2018 are still able to appear for the exam.

NOTE: If a candidate has passed class 12 or equivalent exam from a state but he/she has appeared for the improvement exam from a different state, then the state code where the student originally passed the qualifying exam will be considered for eligibility.

JEE Main 2020 Eligibility Criteria for Admissions to NITs, IIITs and CFTIs

The eligibility conditions that will be considered during admission for the candidates who will not be appearing for the exam are given below:

NITs/ IIITs/ GFTIs Admission:Only the All India Rank (AIR) is used for admissions through Central Seat Allocation Board (CSAB)/Joint Seat Allocation Authority (JoSAA) to NITs/ IIITs/ CFTIs/ SFIs/ Others.

Eligibility for Admission to NITs, IIITs and CFTIs participating through Central Seat Allocation Board: 

Admission to B.E. / B.Tech / B.Arch / B.Planning. Courses in NITs, IIITs and CFTIs participating through Central Seat Allocation Board will be based on All India Rank subject to the condition that the candidate should have secured at least 75% marks in the 12th class examination, or be in the top 20 percentile in the 12th class / Qualifying examination conducted by the respective Boards. For SC/ST candidates the qualifying marks would be 65% in 12th class / qualifying examination.The eligibility criteria decided by the Council of Architecture for admission to B.Arch. course other than NITs, IIITs, CFTIs:
  1. “No candidate shall be admitted to architecture course unless she/he has passed an examination at the end of the qualifying examination with 50% marks in Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics and 50% marks in aggregate of the qualifying examination”.
  2. For B.Planning, the candidates should have passed qualifying examination with 50 % marks in Mathematics and 50% marks in aggregate of the qualifying examination.
  3.  Subject combinations required in the qualifying examination for admission to B.E./B.Tech, B.Arch and B.Planning Courses in NITs, IIITs, and other CFTIs shall be as under. 

JEE Main Eligibility Criteria 2020 for Droppers

There is no specific age limit. Also according to new pattern reduce chances of dropping a year and droppers would not have to waste a full year.

JEE Main 2020 - Details of Improvement Examination

Improvement for all subjects - Candidates 
If an aspirant appears for improvement in all subjects in 2020, then the better of both the years will be considered.
Improvement in one or more subject - If the candidate appears for improvement in 2020, then the top 20 percentile of 2019 will be taken into account. The maximum marks secured in the necessary subjects will be considered to calculate the aggregate percentage in such a case.

Q: What is the eligibility criteria to apply for NITs, IIITs, and GFTIs?
A: Candidate must obtain at least 75% marks (65% in case of SC/ST category) or be within the top 20 percentile in class 12 or equivalent.

Q: Which scores will be considered for JEE Main 2020 if I appear for improvement in 5 subjects?
A: Best among the two scores shall be taken into consideration.

Q: If I fail in one subject in Class 12, can I still apply for JEE Main 2020?
A: A candidate that has failed in class 12 in the year 2017 is not eligible if the candidate is appearing for the exam again in 2018. If the candidate appears in the exam in 2018 and failed in a subject, the candidate is eligible to apply if he/she clears the exam in 2019. At last, if the candidate failed in 2018 and appearing for the re-examination in 2020 then he/she is eligible for JEE Main 2020 examination.

Q: Can I appear for improvement in one subject in Class 12 and apply for JEE Main 2020?
A: YES you can appear for JEE main. While applying for JEE Main, the pass percentage clause does not come into play. It is only considered at the time of admissions during counseling.

Q: What should my state of eligibility to be eligible under home state quota for NITs?
A: The candidate should be from the same state as the NITs to be eligible for the home state quota for that NIT.

Q: If I am appearing for improvement in 2020, what should I enter my class 12 marks section in the JEE Main application form?
A: Candidate should enter the passing year as the year in which he/she first attempted the class 12 examination(2018 or 2019) along with the roll number for that year. During counseling as per NTA, the improvement marks will be taken into consideration and not at the time of the exam.
