IIT JEE Main Exam Pattern

Everybody in today’s time is well aware of the fact that the JEE Main is a first step for students who want to pursue their dreams in the engineering or architectural fields. But due to the stress of the exam, the students often overlook or forget about the very basic thing regarding the preparation for the exam. The basic that we are here referring to is the IIT exam pattern.
Yes, getting the details of the exam pattern of any exam is the first thing that a candidate should do. And like said above JEE Main is not a small exam, it is a challenge in itself. So, to make things easier and convenient for the candidates, this article provides all the necessary information and details regarding the exam pattern of JEE Main 2020.
Moving forward, it is known by students that the JEE Main exam consists of two Papers, Paper 1 and Paper 2. While the Paper 1 is conducted for admission in engineering colleges, the Paper 2 is conducted for admissions in architectural programs. During the registration process, the students have an option to opt Paper 1 or Paper 2 or even both according to their preference. But, the pattern or guidelines for both paper is significantly different, and that is what this article aims to discuss.
However, before coming to the details, the table below provides the schedule of the exam for the year 2020.

Well now let’s move on to discussing the exam pattern of both papers- Paper 1 and Paper 2
Paper 1
  • Paper is mainly conducted for the admission to Undergraduate Engineering Courses.
  • The students have option to choose the exam mode as either Pen and Paper Based or Computer Based. 
  • The Paper will consist questions from 3 main subjects of non-medical or engineering stream- Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics.
  • There will be a total of 90 objective type questions. All 3 subjects have been given equal weightage, that is, 30 questions will be asked from each subject.

  • The students will have 3 hours to complete their Paper. The students who have 40% or more disability will be given 4 hours.
  • Talking about the marking scheme, each correct answer will carry 4 marks. However, 1 negative marks for every wrong answer.

  • As known, this Paper is conducted for the admission to the Undergraduate Architecture Courses.
  • Unlike Paper 1, for Paper 2 students do not have an option of Paper mode as it is offline only.
  • The questions in Paper 2 will comprise of 3 areas or parts - Mathematics, Qualitative Aptitude Test and Drawing Test.
  • In this paper, there will be 2 questions based on Drawing Test, 30 questions from Mathematics and 50 questions from Qualitative Aptitude Test.

  • The question paper medium is Hindi and English only.The students have to specify their preference at the time of filling their application forms.
  • 4 marks for every right answer in case of Mathematics and Qualitative Aptitude Test negative 1 mark for wrong answer.
  • There is no negative marking for drawing paper.

IIT JEE Advanced Exam Pattern

JEE Advanced is the upper phase of IIT JEE Exam. JEE Exam is conducted by IIT every year on a rotation basis. This year JEE Advanced 2020 is conducted by IIT Kanpur. From 2018 onwards JEE Exam mode is changed to online. IIT JEE advanced is the toughest entrance exam to get into the top 22 IIT colleges of the country. Candidates who clear IIT JEE Main with prescribed cut-off are eligible for this IIT JEE Advanced exam. IIT JEE advanced Exam pattern is completely different from IIT JEE Main. JEE Main consist of MCQs whereas JEE Advanced has 3 different types of questions:
  1. MCQs
  2. Numerical answer type(0-9)
  3. Match the following
JEE Advanced consists of two papers (Paper 1 and Paper 2). Both the papers are compulsory. Both the papers are conducted on the same day with the gap of two hours – Paper 1 (9am to 12pm) and Paper 2 (2pm to 5pm). The time duration for both the papers is 3 hours.

The total number of questions asked is 54 and Maximum marks obtained is 180.
The paper is divided into 3 subjects – Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics.

Online mode is started from this year so IIT JEE has provided the MOCK test on their website it is recommended to take those mock test to be familiar with exam mode.
