The rankings are based on the predicted 2018 and the confirmed 2017 rankings issued by the National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) and approved by the Ministry of Human Resource Development.
1. National Institute of Technology, Tiruchirappalli
Situated in the heart of Tamil Nadu on the banks of river Cauvery, the NIT Tiruchirappalli (formerly known as Regional Engineering College) was a joint venture of the Government of India and the Government of Tamil Nadu in 1964. The college was established with a vision of providing best and valuable resources to the society through excellence in technical education and over the edge research. Ever since being true to its goal and the level of growth that this college experienced, it finally became an NIT in 2003.

The foundation stone of this college was laid on 10thOctober 1959, by then Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru. It was renamed as the National Institute of Technology, Warangal in September 2002 and was the first one in the chain of NITs in India. The college as a centre and provided laboratory spaces for start-up soon after its establishment. M/s Infosys (p) Ltd. Had funded a research project in the centre, which is carried out by the faculty and students of NIT Warangal.

Founded as a Regional Engineering College on August 6, 1960, this college is one of the most reputed colleges in south India. In its early years, the college only offered 3 undergraduate programmes- Civil, Mechanical and Electrical Engineering. However, since those early years, its mission and vision of transforming the students into responsible human being with competent professional knowledge were clear. And, because of this, the college was not only taken under the flagship of theNIT but has earned a great positive reputation.

This college was established in 1961 as one of the seventeen Regional Engineering Colleges of India. After the 45 years of its establishment, was transformed into the NIT on June 26, 2002. At first, it only offered B. Tech Programmes in Civil, Mechanical and Electrical Engineering but now offers 9 B. Tech, 19 M. Tech Degree Programmes, MCA, MBA, M Sc. Mathematics and Scientific Computing and Master of Social Work programmes. Plus, it also has PhD programmes.
5. National Institute of Technology, Calicut
Located in the foothills of the Western Ghats, the National Institute of Technology Calicut was set up in 1961 and was originally known as Calicut Regional Engineering College (CREC). The institute was transformed into an NIT in June 2002 by the Ministry of Human Resource Development. Due to its vision and dedication of the faculty, NIT Calicut was able to raise its annual intake 1049 for the undergraduate program.
6. Malaviya National Institute of Technology, Jaipur
Established in 1963, as Malaviya Regional Engineering College, Jaipur, this college was a joint venture of the Government of India and Government of Rajasthan. It was only on June 26, 2002, that the college was given the status of National Institute of Technology. The college aims to create an international standard platform to impart technical education and conduct research for future developments.

Visvesvaraya National Institute of Technology, Nagpur is one of the first National Institutes of Technology in the country. The college was established in the year 1960 under the scheme sponsored by Govt. of Maharashtra and Govt. of India. The college aims to achieve high standards of excellence in engineering and allied disciplines so that it can contribute effectively in producing quality human resources of world-class standard.
