JEE Exam Pattern
Joint Entrance Exam or JEE is a well-known engineering exam that is conducted for admission in the several Undergraduate Engineering Colleges across India. Cracking this exam is the dream of every aspiring engineering student. For this, the students start preparing from the beginning of their +2.However, the very first thing that these aspirants need to do is to learn about the pattern of the exam and that is what this article talk about. This article tries to cover all the crucial information regarding the exam pattern of IIT JEE. Through this, the aspirants will get an idea of what type of Paper they can expect.
The IIT JEE exam is conducted in two stages, the stage one is JEE Mains and the second stage is JEE Advanced. The aspirants need to qualify JEE Mains to appear for JEE Advanced. Well, let’s now directly discuss the exam pattern of both stages in detail.
JEE Mains
The JEE mains exam is the first level of IIT JEE. The JEE Mains exam consists of Two paper- Paper 1 for admission in engineering colleges and Paper 2 for architectural courses. The students have option to choose to appear for either 1 or both the papers. Let’s discuss the pattern of each paper
individually.
Paper 1
- The Paper is conducted for the admission to Undergraduate Engineering Courses.
- The applicants can opt for either Pen and Paper Based or Computer Based on their exam mode.
- The Paper will consist questions from 3 main subjects of non-medical or engineering stream- Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics.
- There are 90 object type questions in the paper where all the 3 subjects have equal weightage. Thus, there will be 30 questions from each subject.

- The duration of the paper is 3 hours.
- The medium of question paper is English or Hindi only.Coming to the marking scheme, each correct response will carry 4 marks.
- 4 marks are given for correct answer.There is negative marking as well, 1 marks will be deducted for every wrong answer.
- The Paper 2 is conducted for the admission into the Undergraduate Architecture Courses.
- Paper 2 is only conducted in offline mode.
- The questions in Paper 2 will comprise of 3 areas or parts- Mathematics, Qualitative Aptitude Test and Drawing Test.
- Coming to the number of questions, there will be 2 questions based on Drawing Test, 30 questions from Mathematics and 50 questions from Qualitative Aptitude Test.

- The medium of paper is Hindi and English only.
- 4 marks will be given for every right answer in case of Mathematics and Qualitative Aptitude Test. For each incorrect answer, 1 mark will be deducted.
- There is no negative marking for drawing section.
As mentioned above, the JEE Advanced exam is tricky as well as challenging. However, those who crack this exam, have high chances of getting admission in every aspiring engineer’s dream institute, that is, IIT.
The JEE Advanced exam consists of two papers, Paper 1 and Paper 2. Also, the exam mode of both paper is Computer Based Test only. Now lets discuss the pattern of both papers individually.
Paper 1
- The duration of the Paper 1 will be 3 hours.
- There will be a total of 54 questions in the Paper 1 which will weigh a total of 306 marks.
- The paper will be divided into 3 section based on 3 subjects- Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics.

- The Paper 1 will have Objective Type questions only, which will constitute of both MCQs as well as numerical based questions.
- The paper will be designed in to test the applicants’ understanding, reasoning and analytical skills.
- Talking about the language of the questions, then, for the convenience of the students, the questions will be both in English and Hindi language. They can choose their preferred language. Moreover, they can also switch between the languages anytime during the exam.
